Robinson, William Heath
b. 1872, London, England; d. 1944, Pinner, England
‘The Pit’, from The ‘First’ Colliery, An Almanach of Four Drawings, issued ‘with the compliments of Lancashire Associated Collieries’, 1938-9 Collection: The National Coal Mining Museum for England, Wakefield.
Heath Robinson was an illustrator and cartoonist whose name has entered the language to describe unnecessarily elaborate and comic home-made contraptions (equivalent to Rube Goldberg in the USA). His talent as a humorist with a satirical edge is clear in his drawings for The ‘First’ Colliery Almanach. DA
