Hüner, Emre

b. 1977, Istanbul, Turkey; lives and works in Berlin, Germany

A Little Larger Than the Entire Universe, 2012 Mixed media installation, variable dimensions

Emre Hüner’s work brings together several disparate elements, including found objects, old maps, postcards, books, geological samples, hand crafted sculptures and specially produced prints or drawings, made by the artist and arranged into sculptural installations that create a poetic, allusive universe where history, nature and culture are brought into a subtle confrontation. A Little Larger Than the Entire Universe (2012) is a development of Hüner’s 2011 project Quixotic, which drew on the history of Fordlandia, the prefabricated industrial town founded by car magnate Henry Ford in the Amazon rain forest in 1928, in order to extract rubber for tyres. This ambitious enterprise failed royally, as neither the native workers nor the jungle itself conformed to the principles of Fordism. In his new work, Hüner continues to question ideas of progress, modernity, utopianism, science and industry from a non-linear perspective. Revisiting the past by way of a hypothetical fast-forward to the future, he presents us with the relics of a lost civilisation in the form of a fragmented, suggestive puzzle. References to the NASA space program, futuristic sculptures, and a motorcycle helmet are combined with volcanic stones from Hawaii, fossils, rocks, and archaic tools, alluding to the afterlife of modernity and industrial production while juxtaposing both periods and materials. Nature and time seem to be the only constants in the aftermath of failure or decay. The work is like an archaeological finding, offering no clear answers, but requiring the viewer to decipher the story on the basis of enigmatic remains. KG
