Goldin+Senneby’s multi-disciplinary practice explores the elusive nature of capital and the opaque world of offshore banking. They create invented, virtual realities in the forms of performances, interventions and publications. Their installation The Decapitation of Money is an investigation into the clandestine zones of global finance and the abstract nature of money, set against the backdrop of a dual space: a bank lobby and a darkened space with a map and audio soundtrack. The work is related to an ongoing project entitled Headless Ltd., a mysterious - but real - offshore company registered in the Bahamas. Goldin+Senneby test the hypothesis that Headless is a reincarnation of the secret society Acéphale (Headless), founded in 1936 by Georges Bataille and friends, who met in Marly Forest, outside Paris (the map of which is included in the exhibition, together with an audio work of a walk in Marly by economic geographer Angus Cameron, who speaks of the development of money and its dematerialisation). The artists connect Acéphale to the “general economy” described in Bataille’s La part maudite (1967, translated as The Accursed Share in 1988), an economic theory based on the notion of excess. They tie this theory in turn to the formation of the “Eurodollar” at the start of the Cold War, when Soviets and Chinese deposited dollars in Europe, to evade US jurisdiction. The layered, complex and often enigmatic nature of the work reflects the artists’ own taciturn modus operandi. They often use other people (writers, curators, artists) to do the work, their ‘act of withdrawal’ imitating the strategies by which offshore-registered companies obscure themselves behind brokers and agents.
