European Civilisation

Rosa Luxemburg wrote an important appraisal of the ways Marx’s theory was being misrepresented and abused, already in 1912. Now, exactly a century later, the bank crises of 2008 and today give this centenary a strong ring. In 1900 the extremely optimistic atmosphere in Europe, drunk on its own capitalistic euphoria, made Paris with its Eiffel Tower into the showcase of the world. The World’s Fair in the heart of Europe was genuinely Promethean: Europe believed that the science and technology of its large cities constituted the means to conquer and ‘civilize’ the world. By 1914 this dream and its promise were definitively shattered: the First and Second World Wars demolished Europe as the centre of the world, let alone the promise of the future. Rosa Luxemburg anticipating this coming disaster like nobody else. But maybe the end of European civilisation was not what happened. Maybe it was only the end of the bourgeois European civilisation? Ever since that period, and even more so after the Second World War, popular culture and so-called cultural heritage have been growing as fields of interest. Typically, these were put in sharp contrast to High Culture: they concern the ways of life, the tastes and customs of the common people. At its best, cultural heritage recognizes and highlights the strong points of a given region. In the case of Limburg, a tight focus on the history of mining and the human efforts it entailed reveals the almost superhuman strength of this region. Miners are confronted with the natural elements like nobody else: light and darkness, earth, gas, air envelope the miner. They determine his chances of survival. Any human being who wants to express such a profound confrontation with the elements will by necessity turn to either religion or art. This engagement gives rise to songs and novels, sculptures and paintings. Here the borders between cultural heritage and art become fuzzy, or perhaps they disappear altogether. HP
