2012 Architects & Refunc
2012 Architects is a Rotterdam-based architectural firm that designs products and buildings, developing strategies to facilitate the transition to a sustainable society. In the context of the worldwide shortage of fossil fuels and other natural resources, 2012Architects develop processes that empower local production and forms of trade as alternatives to transporting our resources, products and components around the globe. Their work shows that waste-streams and limited resources can serve as opportunities for innovative design. The firm understands design not as the beginning of a linear process but rather as one phase among many in a continuous cycle of creation and recreation, use and reuse.

REFUNC is a laboratory that promotes the extension of economic life-cycles by creating experimental structures and mobile micro-architecture based on waste material streams. As “garbage architects” working at the intersections of architecture, design and art, they breathe new life into defunct objects. Locating the origin of their designs in objects themselves, they are attentive to their composition, histories, and social contexts. Refunctionalising found or discarded objects, REFUNC remains open to often unpredictable results. The working processes of 2012Architects and REFUNC are thus well-matched, having a common denominator in the practice of transforming objects and contexts that are already at hand. This has brought them together for the design and implementation of the facilities for Manifesta 9, for which they have worked with the characteristics of the existing building, the history of the mining industry and the production waste of new industries.
